Do you remember the days when you . . .
- really loved your job and where your career was headed?
- had enough free time for yourself?
- felt as though you were making what you were worth?
- were really focused on the needs of your family and your self?
- were confident in your skills and experience?
Then one day you woke up and all that changed. And you thought “What in the world happened?”
Your company has probably fallen victim to some changing trends that have impacted you and your family, as well as countless families across the country.
- The technology that we used in the past is obsolete and has been replaced with faster and better models — which means a new way of managing information. Are you up to speed with the latest technology shifts in your company?
- Maybe your team has been affected by severe cutbacks in personnel, which has resulted in you having to do more with less. Can they remain productive and motivated to continue to do the work?
- If you are one of the fortunate ones, you may have survived a lay off only to be part of a department consolidation. Maybe your center of influence has shifted and your new team includes those who are skeptical and challenging. How do you create an environment of trust that instills confidence in your leadership?
- With the cost of doing business overseas becoming more and more attractive, your job may have just been outsourced to a private company. Now you have to make a choice and learn another skill in order to keep your job. What are the options before you?
Here’s a much bigger shift to consider:
- There was a time when you were told what to do, and you did it — that was how things were done.
- In past performance reviews, you were rated against how many widgets you produced against company goals. Good work was rewarded!
- Today, there is a new demand for you to think for yourself, be proactive and reach out for responsibility. It is no longer okay for you to just do the work; you must prove that you understand why the work is required and what tasks or skills you use to complete the work.
- In today’s performance review, you have to showcase your ability to get the work done, build healthy relationships and collaborate, communicate effectively in writing, and troubleshoot potential problems before they happen.
Where in the world did this shift come from? This shift came from the changes described above. With the shift in America’s workforce and technology, came the shift in how employers hire, retain, and promote their employees. The bottom line has moved to the top of the list because survival goes to those who are technologically ready and driven to meet the growing demands of today’s consumer. The shock is that the shift came without any warning and many workers are being shipwrecked, dashed against the rocks.
For those who have survived the shipwreck, there are many questions about the future of the company, how the next layoff will impact them, and whether it makes sense to stay or go.
This is where Choosing Conscious Change can help. Being conscious of the changes you have to make in your life takes personal responsibility. It can be a bit scary because it may be a new way of thinking, but it is also empowering because you can control the outcome.
“Be assured to know that life does begin to flow when we act in alignment with our values; when there is no conflict in what we think, what we say and what we do.”
